Eritrea – Green Villages

Eritrea
Region Anseba
Goal
The idea of the Green Villages project was to significantly and sustainably improve the living conditions and nutritional situation in 35 villages in the Anseba region of Eritrea.
Realization
With the help of the Green Clubs, 22 vegetable gardens were laid out and 6,600 vegetable and fruit seedlings were planted. In addition, 200 donkeys for carrying water, 260 goats and 25 beehives were distributed to poor women. Four rainwater collection systems were set up, four wells repaired and several solar-powered water pumps installed.
Result
More than 36,000 people in 35 villages have benefited from these measures. Today, larger areas of arable land can be cultivated and more food produced than before. Income opportunities have been created for several hundred women: they sell water, donkey offspring, honey, fruit and vegetables. About 1,000 people in remote villages without electricity have been given solar lamps and 650 families have received new energy-saving, low-pollutant cooking stoves, which they use to make the flatbread they need every day. It can be assumed that in the long term, Green Villages will reduce hunger, make nutrition more varied and improve the drinking water supply.
