Eritrea – Green Clubs

Eritrea
Green Clubs
Background
The first Green Clubs were launched in 1992 by the Eritrean Ministry of Agriculture to promote environmental awareness among schoolchildren. They plant vegetable gardens and trees.
Implementation
The WaterFoundation has been supporting the Green Clubs since 2012 by providing gardening tools such as watering cans, shovels and pickaxes. Those who get involved in the Green Clubs receive solar lamps and donated bicycles as a token of appreciation. There are now over 530 Green Clubs with around 15,000 active members in state schools. They are therefore important knowledge multipliers.
The Green Clubs are supervised by teachers and water experts who teach students important knowledge about gardening, water collection, water and soil conservation. The Water Foundation has produced a brochure on the subject of water (10,000 copies), which is displayed in the Green Clubs and distributed to schoolchildren, teachers and villagers by volunteers. Numerous illustrations make it understandable even to those who cannot read.
Result
The national Greening Day takes place every year in May with a celebration and an evaluation of the goals achieved.
Budget
More than €72,000 worth of aid has been sent.
