Running water restored in five clinics in Tanzania

Patients and staff benefit from improved hygiene conditions

Between April and September 2025, WaterFoundation and its local partners in the Kilombero district of Tanzania achieved an important goal: the sustainable restoration of the water supply to five healthcare facilities.

These clinics previously faced major challenges in the area of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), in particular the lack of their own reliable water systems. Medical staff often had to fetch water from external sources, and the permanent water shortage and unhygienic conditions impaired care and increased the risk of infection.

The construction of a new water point, the renovation and expansion of four existing extraction points, the construction of five 5,000-liter storage towers, and a comprehensive water distribution system have ensured a continuous supply.

Clean water and hand washing facilities are now available at all times in all important areas of the clinic – the laboratory, maternity ward, treatment rooms, and toilets. Separate wastewater collection chambers and locally produced ceramic filters additionally ensure drinking water quality and a secure supply.

Crucially, medical staff can now concentrate fully on patient care, as there is no longer any need to fetch water, hygiene standards are maintained, infection risks are minimized, and laboratory tests can be carried out on site. More than 11,000 people benefit from the improved infrastructure – not only patients and employees, but also residents of the surrounding communities, who also have access to the new water facilities. Training and community engagement have created sustainable structures that strengthen accountability and ensure long-term success.

The WaterFoundation would like to thank all partners, Mr. and Mrs. Schlittenhardt, and the local population for their great cooperation – another step towards better healthcare in Tanzania.
