Project completion in Ethiopia

Clean water for Wagdi Kortu

In the rural community of Wagdi Kortu in the Chaliya district of the Oromia region in Ethiopia, 62 households with a total of 384 people have so far lived without access to clean drinking water. Every day, women and children had to walk long distances to unsafe water sources, facing serious health risks and additional burdens for their families.

With the support of the WaterFoundation and in close cooperation with our experienced partner organization EDA-E, a sustainable spring catchment project has now been successfully completed. The spring, located about 1,000 meters away, was covered, cleaned, and equipped with a stable spring catchment. Via a 1,000-meter HDPE pipeline, the water is transported to a 4 m³ water tank with three taps and a washing area. The access area has been paved and the water point fenced to protect it from animals and unauthorized access.

A key element of the project is the active involvement of the local community: Residents carried out earthworks and were trained in operation, maintenance and basic repairs. A local water committee was established and trained to ensure long-term functionality and to organize usage in a transparent way.

As a result, 384 people now have permanent access to clean water. This reduces water-related diseases, improves hygiene and living conditions and strengthens future prospects – especially for women and children, who now gain more time for education, income-generating activities and family life.

We would like to thank all donors and partners who have made the successful completion of this important project in Wagdi Kortu possible.
