Menstrual hygiene in Tanzania

In rural areas of Tanzania, menstruation is still surrounded by myths, shame, and a lack of information. Many girls do not receive enough support at home or at school, while limited access to hygiene products and poor sanitation make everyday school life even more difficult.
With the project “Sharing knowledge and breaking taboos,” WasserStiftung and its local partner MSABI are addressing this challenge directly. At 30 rural schools in the Ifakara region, girls will receive training on menstruation, personal hygiene, and the use of reusable menstrual products. The project also strengthens teachers, establishes WASH and MHM clubs, and involves parents, young people, and community representatives in open dialogue.
The project aims to enable girls to manage menstruation in a hygienic, confident, and self-determined way while supporting regular school attendance. In total, around 13,695 people will benefit directly and indirectly.
The project runs from April 2026 to February 2027 and is funded by Deutsche Postcode Lotterie.
